Online teaching is the method of teaching via the internet, unlike the traditional form of classroom learning, where the teacher is the main form of information and learning. It is a type of distance learning method, where the traditional classrooms no longer exist. It has its own benefits of being flexible, easy accessible, comfortable and learning with self-learning .The teaching –learning can occur in any location irrespective of the geographical boundaries, but the possible challenges are assessing learning remotely, instructional materials for online teaching, fast track to remote teaching, teachers & taught both being new to online teaching and making material accessible. In the present scenario online teaching may seem like the logical method to continue imparting education, despite all emerging challenges. Here, it is imperative and important on the part of the academia to deliberate upon, whether technology could make education more productive, powerful in accelerating and facilitating educational processes towards smooth imparting of the online learning.
A teacher uses educational technology in the class, she/ he provides concrete (physical) structure to the mental (abstract) objectives. Educational technology is the efficient organization of any learning system adapting or adopting methods, process and products to serve, identifies educational goals. It acts as an agent of change in the classroom, which includes not only the teacher and the teaching-learning process but also systematic issues like reach, equity and quality. The application of technology in education refers to application of engineering principles in the development of electro-mechanical equipment used for instructional purposes. . It gives us a number of devices (media) with tremendous capabilities to facilitate the learning process of a given group of students. The emphasis is on the scientific way of teaching-designing, structuring and implementing teaching to achieve well defined objectives. Research in instructional media reveals that motivated students can learn a great deal from any of the media besides facilitates individual students to learn according to their requirement and pace of learning. Individual students interact with instructional materials and pursue their learning tasks by themselves at their own arte of learning and are presented with opportunities to obtain information about their progress. A systematic approach to teaching-learning includes specification of objectives designing and structuring content, determining evaluation techniques, etc. Because of advance planning and involvement of experts available in the area of study, mediated-teaching imparts quality education to unlimited number of students. Technology is needed to facilitate human learning through systematic identification, development, organization and utilization of a full range of learning resources and through the management of these resources.
Uses of technology in education have affected the conventional roles of the teachers and equips them with technical mindset to perform various activities related to teaching and thus changed and improved the whole process of education .It has helped teachers to use scientific and systematic approaches to conduct action research in the classroom situation to overcome the classroom problems, related to classroom environment, content, curriculum, etc. It adds to the teaching competence, modifies their teaching behaviour and style, inculcates a scientific outlook, approach and attitude and helps them transfer to the learners. It also helps to modify teachers’ behavior and enables to make changes and thus makes teaching more effective. The impact of educational technology is tremendous in overall development of learning outcome of the students.
Augmentation of low cost technology in imparting online education is an intellectual and practical pursuit concerned with all aspects of the design and optimal organization of educational systems and sub-systems and with the relation between their inputs and outputs, between desired outcomes and the allocations of resources to achieve them. Online learning is soon going to become popular because of its potential for providing more flexible access to content and instruction at any time, from any place. The use and innovation of technology in online education is likely to sweep the country very fast. We, the teachers should be rather ready to receive and respond to this massive change in the field of education. The fast emerging applications of technology are used to support different models of online learning. One class of online learning models uses asynchronous communication tools (e.g., e-mail, threaded discussion boards, newsgroups) to allow users to contribute at their convenience, while the other Synchronous technologies (e.g., webcasting, chat rooms, desktop audio/video technology) are used to approximate face-to-face teaching strategies such as delivering lectures and holding meetings with groups of students. It may take little time but the real tasks for the institutions begin in working on the selection of appropriate new media mix, Learning Module System i.e. App application, mobile learning ,etc. A well-researched Instructional Technology consisting of right packaging of learning content having features of real time peer group interactions with simultaneous assessment through proper MCQs keeping a very close eyes on learning outcome with online dialogue box/ discussion forum may help the institutions in realizing the dividends of future on line teaching learning opportunities The challenges of offering online education may become blessing in disguise in accessing the potential and the capabilities of our institutions in responding to the future necessity of online learning.
